How layaway payments are calculated

The math behind a layaway plan is simple, but it’s easy to make a mistake at a busy counter:

  1. Total = price + sales tax + any layaway fee.
  2. Balance = total − deposit.
  3. Each payment = balance ÷ number of payments, rounded down to the cent. The last payment picks up the leftover cents so the plan adds up exactly.
  4. Due dates step forward from the start date by a week, two weeks or a month. Monthly dates stay on the same day of the month, or the last day when a month is shorter.

Example: a $1,200 sofa with 6% tax is $1,272. With 20% down the deposit is $254.40, leaving $1,017.60. Over 6 payments every 2 weeks, that’s $169.60 each.

Layaway questions

How do I work out a layaway payment?
Add sales tax and any layaway fee to the price to get the total. Subtract the deposit to get the balance. Divide the balance by the number of payments. The calculator does this for you and rounds each payment to the cent, with the last payment covering any leftover cents.
How much deposit should I ask for on a layaway?
It’s up to your store. Many stores ask for a set percentage, such as 10%, 20% or 25%, or a fixed minimum. A bigger deposit means smaller payments and less risk for you.
How long should a layaway plan be?
Most stores keep layaways short, often a few weeks to a few months, so the item doesn’t sit in the back for too long. Try different payment counts and schedules in the calculator to find what works for your customers.
Can I give the plan to my customer?
Yes. Add your store and customer name, press Print and hand it over, or save it as a PDF. There’s a signature line at the bottom.
Is the calculator free?
Yes, completely free and no sign-up is needed. If you want every payment tracked for you automatically, try Naddaf Suite free for 7 days.
